Why do I Always Wear Headphones?

Umama Shahed Momo

Have you noticed how headphones (or AirPods) always seem glued to everyone’s ears these days? Especially among younger folks, it is rare to see someone out on the street without them. So, what’s fuelling this ongoing attachment to audio devices? Funny enough, I am writing this wearing headphones myself! In this post, I will explore a few reasons behind this trend becoming more than just a habit.

1. Fashion

Wearing headphones is not only a necessity, but it has also become an integral part of fashion. Over-ear headphones have become more than just audio tools – they are fashion accessories, especially in tech-savvy wear. You will see them paired with hoodies and sneakers, creating a vibe that resonates with gamers, creatives and Gen Z trendsetters. Even if they are particularly listening to nothing, you will still notice AirPods or headphones. Globalisation, anime and pop culture have made further contributions.

2. Convenient

AirPods and headphones aren’t just for style – they are genuinely useful. Whether you are commuting or multitasking, these things deserve five stars for keeping your hands free. Fashion and convenience are both in sync here. The younger generation is always working hard to avoid hassle as much as possible.

3. Aestheticism in Earphones

Earphones have slipped into aesthetic realms too. Aesthetics, after all, is about how we perceive beauty, art and taste. Browse Pinterest or Instagram; you will find them posed beside books or coffee mugs. Even old-school MP3 players from the ‘90s are coming back. Once outdated tech, they are now considered aesthetic objects. That's how quickly tastes can shift!!

4. Avoiding Public Conversation

Right!!! Don't get me wrong. Headphones can be the best choice to avoid having conversation (especially someone who gets one your nerve!!).

Headphones act as a social shield against them. If I don’t feel like talking or feel uncomfortable around someone, they can offer an easy way to sneak out of the conversation without coming across as standoffish or arrogant. But it can backfire, as some might take it the wrong way. Therefore, you better be careful!

5. Protection From Noise

Reading a book at the same time as listening to white noise is said to help increase attention and prevent distractions. But wearing headphones for longer periods can have an adverse effect on your brain. The microwave frequencies released from the headphones are extremely dangerous. It simply means you are wearing two microwaves on your ears at the same time. Some also listen to music while studying, which could lead to devastating effects on study, because the frequency of music disrupts your natural thinking power and memorisation.

Overusing headphones or not using them at all—both vary from person to person. I used to think that headphones were a creepy, romanticised way of avoiding interactions. Some people even use them to bring out their mysterious side. That may be true, but at the same time, it’s quite difficult for me to deny the benefits of using headphones. What is your opinion? Feel free to share.

That's it for today.

Hasta Luego!!
